Today, we celebrate the 45th anniversary of Earth Day, a day designed to promote a healthy and sustainable environment. The idea of Earth Day came from a time where war was on the forefront of issues in society, protestors took to the streets to be heard about peace in the world. During this time, a massive oil spill occurred in California, and with that came a new idea to talk about, environmental protection. The public emerged with information regarding water and air pollution, and before long the government picked up on the idea. Senator Nelson announced “national teach-in on the environment”, to the media, persuading others to get involved. As a result, on April, 22nd 1970, over 20 million people across the United States came together to give back to the environment.

Earth Day has since become a nationally recognized day, with over 1 billion people and 192 countries participating. A variety of environmental organizations host different activities ranging from promoting green economy within the workplace and schools to building trees and educating communities.  2015 is said to possibly be an exciting year. Climate change has sparked a lot of interest over the past few years and people are working hard to finally pass a binding global climate change treaty, which is hoping to reduce global emissions and help with climate change issues.

While every day should be Earth Day, companies, individuals and environmental organizations make it a point to be a little more eco-friendly on April 22nd. Happy Earth Day to all!
